Rules we build for
Courts regularly apply the Americans with Disabilities Act to the websites of businesses open to the public, though there’s no formal technical standard for private companies; WCAG 2.1 AA is the common benchmark. State and local governments have their own DOJ rule, with compliance dates now set for 2027 and 2028.
California’s CCPA, as amended by the CPRA, applies to businesses that meet its revenue or data thresholds and requires notices, a “Do Not Sell or Share” opt-out and respect for Global Privacy Control signals. New rules on risk assessments and automated decision-making took effect in January 2026, and about 20 states now have comparable laws.
Since the Supreme Court’s 2018 Wayfair decision, states can require online sellers with no physical presence to collect sales tax once they pass an economic threshold, often US$100,000 in annual sales. Tax tools in Shopify and Stripe help, but you still register in each state where you cross it.
Commercial email needs accurate sender details, a valid postal address and an opt-out that is honoured within 10 business days.
